Synopsis

The Opera – a world full of glamour, history, expectations and competition. Only a few reach the top. Almost all singers want to become the Primadonna, the first woman on stage: the main character. How deep are the scars of a successful career? And what if you are not enough? The singing woman has always been adored on stage, but the hard work behind the careers is something very few truly understand. PRIMADONNA OR NOTHING accompanies three female singers, each at different stages of their opera careers, revealing the dedication and passion that drive them. Valerie Eickhoff – a mezzo soprano from Germany – has just started her career. Beginning her journey as an understudy at a renowned German opera house, Valerie realizes that this will not get her to the goal of being „the first one“. She decides to put everything on the line and travels to Montréal, Canada, to participate in her first international singing competition. Meanwhile Angel Joy Blue already lives the life that Valerie is only dreaming about: the LA-born two-time grammy winner travels the world to sing on the biggest stages. When returning to her home after 15 years, Angel starts to see the price of such a stressful life. The legendary Soprano Renata Scotto has lived through that, and more.. The retired Diva looks back at decades in the spotlight. Her voice took her all around the world. Now Renata lives in her hometown Savona, Italy, still reminiscing about her time on stage and her great successes. She misses her singing voice deeply and tries to find peace through other young singers. And although she cannot sing anymore, she offers us one last performance. PRIMADONNA OR NOTHING is an intimate portrait about the desire to reach for the stars. It offers a rare glimpse into the lives of three dedicated artists, showcasing their struggles, triumphs, and unwavering commitment to the art of Opera.
